How a week actually works

Fly in, hunt or photograph, sit at the fire. The details below are the practical ones. Confirm the rest when you inquire.

Getting there

Fly-in depends on the itinerary. Kimberley is the usual Northern Cape door for a Douglas / Green Karoo trip — confirm. Cape Town or Johannesburg if the week starts on the coast or you are on the flight special.

Airport transfers are extra on most packages ($25 per person from Kimberley on the plains special). Rifle import is arranged before you leave home. WOW will tell you which form and which caliber they want on that concession.

Weather, in °F

Summer (December–February): days often 89–91°F, nights still warm around 63°F. Winter (June–July): days in the mid 60s, nights 37–39°F, sometimes near freezing. Spring and autumn sit between.

Pack for heat and for a cold night. A fleece and a brimmed hat both earn their space.

On the rate / off the rate

Usually included: lodge, meals, local drinks, laundry, PH, tracker, skinner, field prep of trophies.

Usually not: hard liquor, airport pickup, gratuities, dip and pack, crating, shipping, taxidermy, extra species, anything before or after the safari.

Kids, malaria, observers

All ages are welcome. Northern Cape / Kalahari weeks are malaria-free. Observers sit in camp at a daily rate — ask. A spouse who photographs while you hunt is normal.

Evenings are cards by the fire as often as they are hunting stories. It is not only about the animals.

What to pack

  • Neutral field clothes, layers for a near-freezing winter night
  • Broken-in boots, a warm hat, sun protection
  • Rifle and ammunition as agreed in writing, or say if you will use camp rifles
  • Binoculars, camera, any medicine you actually take
  • Soft bags beat hard cases once you leave the airport

A full list goes out with the booking. If you are bringing children, say so early — the lodge and the vehicle change with party shape.
